About Us

The Field Recorders' Collective is a new organization formed by Ray Alden and Tim Brown dedicated to release of materials (music and photographs) from private collections. At this time your support for this project is extremely important. In purchasing product from the Field Recorders' Collective you will be making it possible for us to continue this endeavor and provide funds back to the collectors and through them to the surviving musicians.

A large amount of the FRC releases have never been available before while some have been shared informally. However, you will find that the FRC releases are of much higher quality than earlier releases. This is because of the technology available using pro-audio digital workstations. Both Ray Alden and Tim Brown have spent many hours in the studio cleaning up the sound (removing hums, pops, hiss and other annoying noises) as well as elevating the volume of the music to a consistent, enjoyable to level. We think you will find these FRC release an important addition to your traditional music library.

The initial group of collectors who have provided us materials include:

  • Ray Alden
  • Andy Cahan
  • Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music
  • Susie Goehring - The Jeff Goehring Collection
  • Peter Hoover

This objective is made possible because a number of factors:

  1. Ray and Tim have full professional multi-track digital audio workstations that allow the clean up and mastering of old recordings
  2. The cost of mid-to-low-volume CD manufacturing has come down to make it economical (assuming that we sell all copies at retail price, unfortunately this means that wholesale distribution of this material is not possible at this time)
  3. The Internet - The internet allows us to reduce the packaging that accompanies our CD releases. We will rely on this web site to provide more complete liner notes as they are developed. The internet also allows us to sell product on-line. Although this is not currently set up we plan on adding this function to the web site in the near future.

We hope that you will enjoy the FRC releases and support our efforts.
